View leaving Dakar for Isle De La Madelleine

Sunday 1/21, 2019 Iles De La Madeleine National Park

Sunday a few of us chartered a boat to Isles De La Madeleine National Park---a completely uninhabited and protected(since 1949!) islan(s) with/in sight from the Corniche in Dakar. The fishermen here in Dakar(the Lebou tribe) believe they are home to the protector spirit of Dakar. It is volcanic and there is some sparse evidence  of humans being here a thousand years ago. Seabirds are everywhere and there dropping stain things a chalky white. This used to be big business for fertilizer before we invented chemical fertilizers. Dutch traders called them the Shitten Isles. I took a bunch of pictures and they are to follow. We spent 4 hours there---not much cover from the sun but we rented umbrellas and brought water and snacks..

Friday JAN 11, 2019

Friday was devoted to Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on Migration in West Africa....not only African migration to Europe and beyond, but migration within Africa itself---from rural to urban etc. We watched a film by Moussa Toure, a prominent and respected Senegalese modern filmmaker---called "La Pirogue". It dealt with a group of people trying to reach Spain on a fishing boat----from Senegal and Guinea. hard to watch, tragic, mesmerizing. Beautifully made.
